The new granny flat rules put more responsibility on families. We want every family — whatever language they speak at home — to know what to check, and to have someone in their own community they can ask.

Since 15 January 2026, a granny flat of up to 70m² can be built without a building consent. Council no longer checks the work along the way — but it must still meet the Building Code.
Many of the families building these homes are multigenerational households from Chinese, Punjabi, Hindi-speaking, Pasifika and other communities. Building advice often travels by word of mouth, through the people families already trust. Our Partnership Teams put clear, accurate checklists into those conversations.
One trusted bilingual person for each language — ideally an LBP, inspector, designer or experienced builder.
Give your clients a clear record of each construction milestone, with an optional LBP sign-off on every stage.
Kitset suppliers, builders of granny flats and mortgage brokers can offer the checklist as part of their service.
Marae, churches, temples, gurdwaras, cultural associations and residents' groups.
